The Carnival is Over – “Iz-za ostrova na strezhen” Solo Ukulele – Colin Tribe

This tune is a Russian folk song “Iz-za ostrova na strezhen” “Волга, Волга, мать родная” about the revolutionary leader Stenka Razin and it became popular in Russia during the 1890s. It is also used in a Dutch hymn “Vol Verwachting Blijf Ik Uitzien”, and a Dutch nursery rhyme “Aan de Oever van de Rotte”.
It was performed by the Osipov State Russian Folk Orchestra (balalaikas and domras) during their 1967 tour of Australia and thenTom Springfield wrote the lyrics for The Seekers after a trip to Brazil, where he witnessed the Carnival in Rio.
